nGimat has developed an innovative liquid atomizer for use in its NanoSpraySM Combustion Processing technology for the manufacture of thin films and nanopowders. This novel device is referred to as the Nanomiser Device because of its ability to produce an aerosol of controlled size down to sub-micron range from 0.002 to 4 L/min flow rates without any atomizing gas. The ability to produce small-size droplets with narrow size distribution is of critical importance in the NanoSpray Combustion Processing technology, where precursor solutions are converted to a fine mist that is efficiently combusted in nanopowder and thin film deposition applications. nGimat is also implementing the Nanomiser Device to enable improved mixing leading to uniform and complete combustion in SI engine and gas turbine combustion systems. In addition, it can be used, without combustion of the aerosol, to spray polymers for film or nanopowder formation and to convert pharmaceuticals to submicron- and nano-size particles.

The graph below shows droplet size distribution for the NanoSpray Process of a typical nGimat solution (measured using Malvern Sizer 2600). Note that the detector limit is 1.2 micrometers.

Nanomiser

NanoSpray Combustion Processing flame temperature (using flame pyrometry) and species concentration (using emission spectrometry) profiles have been measured. A temperature profile is shown below.
